About Urhobo Day

Celebrating Our People, Our Cultures and Our Shared Heritage

Urhobo Day is one of the major cultural celebrations organized by the Urhobo Association of Manitoba.

Although the event is known as Urhobo Day, it is a celebration of both the Urhobo and Isoko peoples, recognizing their distinct cultural identities, rich traditions and longstanding historical and cultural connections.

Held once every two years, the event creates a special opportunity for Urhobo and Isoko people living in Manitoba, across Canada and in other parts of the world to come together.

It is a time to reconnect with family and friends, welcome new generations, share cultural experiences and celebrate the values that unite our communities.

Through this gathering, UAM continues its commitment to preserving our heritage, promoting cultural understanding and strengthening the relationships that connect our people.

Different Traditions. Shared Connections. One Community.

A Celebration Beyond Borders

Connecting Our Global Community

Our heritage knows no borders.

From our ancestral communities in Delta State, Nigeria, to cities across Canada and other parts of the world, Urhobo and Isoko people continue to carry their cultures, traditions and identities wherever they live.

Urhobo Day provides a unique opportunity for members of our global community to reconnect in Manitoba.

Every two years, families, friends and guests from within and outside Canada gather to celebrate our roots, renew relationships and create new connections.

For some, it is an opportunity to reunite with loved ones. For others, it is a chance to meet fellow Urhobo and Isoko people, experience familiar traditions and introduce their children to a wider cultural community.

Regardless of where we live, Urhobo Day reminds us that our shared heritage continues to connect us.

Different Countries. Shared Roots. One Global Community.

Experience Our Cultures

A Celebration of Traditions, Music, Food and Community

Urhobo Day offers a vibrant cultural experience that brings the traditions of the Urhobo and Isoko peoples to life.

The celebration showcases the beauty of our cultures through activities that honour our heritage, encourage participation and create memorable experiences for all generations.

Traditional Music & Dance

Experience the rhythms, songs and dances that bring Urhobo and Isoko cultural celebrations to life.

Traditional music and dance are powerful expressions of our heritage, reflecting community identity, celebration and the joy of togetherness.

Through cultural performances, we celebrate the creativity, energy and traditions that have connected our people for generations.

Traditional Food & Cuisine

Discover the rich flavours of Urhobo and Isoko cuisine.

Traditional foods such as Owo soup with starch, Banga soup and other cherished dishes represent more than meals. They are part of our family histories, cultural identity and shared experiences.

Food brings people together, sparks memories of home and provides an opportunity for younger generations and guests to experience our culinary heritage.

Traditional Attire & Cultural Fashion

Celebrate the elegance, colours and beauty of Urhobo and Isoko traditional attire.

From beautifully styled wrappers and headwear to coral beads and other cultural accessories, traditional clothing expresses our identities and the pride we take in our heritage.

Urhobo Day provides an opportunity for attendees to showcase traditional styles and appreciate the cultural expressions of both communities.

Cultural Heritage & Storytelling

Our stories connect the past to the present.

Through oral traditions, historical accounts, proverbs, language and cultural conversations, we honour the knowledge passed down by our parents, grandparents and community elders.

Urhobo Day creates opportunities to share these stories and encourage younger generations to understand the history, traditions and values that have shaped our communities.

Children & Youth Cultural Experiences

Our children are the future custodians of our heritage.

Urhobo Day provides opportunities for children and young people to experience cultural traditions, participate in activities, connect with other families and develop pride in their Urhobo and Isoko identities.

By creating meaningful cultural experiences for our children, we help ensure that our heritage remains alive for generations to come.

Community Fellowship & Reunions

One of the most meaningful aspects of Urhobo Day is the opportunity to reconnect.

Families, friends and community members who may live in different cities or countries come together to celebrate, share experiences and strengthen relationships.

It is a time for laughter, friendship, new connections and lasting memories.

The final program of performances, activities and cultural presentations will be announced by the organizing committee.

Our Shared Heritage

From the Western Niger Delta to the World

The Urhobo and Isoko peoples have deep ancestral roots in Nigeria's Western Niger Delta, particularly present-day Delta State.

Across generations, both peoples have developed rich cultural traditions expressed through language, traditional institutions, family relationships, music, food, ceremonies and community life.

Although Urhobo and Isoko maintain distinct identities, languages and community histories, they also share longstanding cultural and historical connections.

Today, our people live in communities across Nigeria, Canada and throughout the world.

Wherever we settle, our traditions remain important connections to our ancestry and identity.

Through Urhobo Day, we honour these connections while celebrating the diversity and unity of our communities.

Our Roots. Our Cultures. Our Shared Future.

Celebrating Unity in Diversity

Two Proud Cultures. One Strong Community.

The Urhobo Association of Manitoba is built on the shared commitment of Urhobo and Isoko people to preserve their heritage, strengthen community relationships and support one another.

Urhobo Day reflects the spirit of this unity.

It recognizes that our different histories, traditions and cultural expressions enrich our community and create opportunities for mutual understanding and appreciation.

Through our shared celebrations, we honour our individual identities while embracing the relationships that connect us.

Our strength lies not in being identical, but in our ability to celebrate our differences while working together as one community.

United in Heritage. Connected in Friendship. Stronger Together.

Our Children. Our Heritage. Our Future.

Passing Our Traditions to the Next Generation

Cultural heritage is a gift that must be shared to remain alive.

For Urhobo and Isoko children growing up outside Nigeria, opportunities to experience their ancestral cultures are especially important.

Urhobo Day creates an environment where young people can hear traditional music, see cultural performances, experience traditional foods, wear cultural attire and connect with elders and other children who share their heritage.

These experiences help young people develop a deeper understanding of their family histories and a stronger sense of belonging.

Our goal is to ensure that future generations remain proud of their roots while confidently building their lives wherever they call home.

By celebrating our heritage today, we help preserve it for tomorrow.

Our Children. Our Heritage. Our Future.

A Biennial Tradition

A Special Gathering Every Two Years

Urhobo Day is held once every two years, making each celebration a special occasion for our extended community.

This biennial tradition provides an opportunity to bring together Urhobo and Isoko people from different parts of Canada and beyond for a memorable cultural gathering.

Each edition of Urhobo Day builds upon the connections, experiences and memories of previous celebrations.

As our community grows, the event continues to serve as an important expression of our identity, unity and commitment to cultural preservation.

It is more than a date on the calendar. It is an opportunity to come home to our community, wherever we may be travelling from.

Community Service

Urhobo Outreach

Urhobo Outreach

Extending a Helping Hand. Sharing Hope. Strengthening Our Community.

Together We Care. Together We Serve. Together We Make a Difference.

At the Urhobo Association of Manitoba (UAM), we believe that community is not only about celebrating our heritage but also about making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Through Urhobo Outreach, members of our Urhobo and Isoko communities come together to extend kindness, compassion and practical support to individuals and families experiencing hardship in Manitoba.

From collecting and distributing clothing to providing hot meals during Winnipeg's cold winter months and volunteering with community organizations such as Siloam Mission, our outreach activities reflect our shared commitment to generosity, service and community responsibility.

We believe that even the smallest act of kindness can bring warmth, dignity and hope to someone in need.

One Community. Many Helping Hands. Lasting Impact.

About Urhobo Outreach

Our Heritage Inspires Us to Serve

Urhobo Outreach is a community service initiative organized by the Urhobo Association of Manitoba, bringing together Urhobo and Isoko members who share a passion for helping others.

Our cultures have long valued hospitality, generosity, respect for others and the importance of supporting one another.

Through this initiative, we put those values into action by reaching beyond our immediate association to support the wider Manitoba community.

Our outreach efforts focus on providing practical assistance, offering comfort and showing compassion to individuals who may be facing difficult circumstances.

Whether through a warm meal, a donated winter jacket or a few hours of volunteer service, we strive to remind people that they are valued and not forgotten.

Rooted in Culture. United in Compassion. Committed to Service.

What We Do

Making a Difference Through Action

Our outreach activities focus on meeting practical needs and supporting organizations that serve vulnerable individuals and families.

Clothing & Essential Item Donations

Sharing What We Have With Those in Need

Through clothing donation drives, UAM members collect gently used clothing and other useful items to support people experiencing financial hardship or homelessness.

Donations may include winter jackets, sweaters, trousers, shoes, gloves, scarves and other essential clothing items.

During Manitoba's harsh winter months, access to warm clothing can make a meaningful difference in someone's comfort and well-being.

By coming together to collect and distribute these items, we help extend the life of useful clothing while providing practical support to people who need it.

A Simple Donation Can Bring Warmth and Comfort.

Winter Hot Meal Outreach

Serving Warm Meals. Sharing Human Kindness.

Winnipeg winters can be particularly challenging for individuals experiencing homelessness.

Through our winter outreach activities, UAM volunteers prepare, organize and help distribute hot meals to people in need.

Beyond providing nourishment, these moments offer an opportunity to show kindness, respect and human connection.

A warm meal during a cold winter day can provide more than physical comfort. It can also communicate care, compassion and a sense of community.

Our volunteers work together to make these outreach experiences meaningful and respectful for everyone involved.

Warm Meals. Caring Hearts. Hope in Every Serving.

Volunteering With Community Organizations

Working Together for a Stronger Manitoba

We recognize the important work being done by local organizations that support individuals and families facing homelessness, poverty and other challenges.

UAM members participate in volunteer service opportunities with organizations such as Siloam Mission, contributing their time and effort to initiatives that serve vulnerable members of our community.

Through these experiences, our volunteers support existing community services while learning more about the challenges faced by people experiencing hardship.

We believe collaboration and service are essential to building a caring and inclusive society.

Giving Our Time. Sharing Our Strength. Supporting Our Neighbours.

Community Support & Acts of Kindness

Small Actions. Meaningful Change.

Not every act of service requires a large event.

Sometimes making a difference begins with recognizing a need and choosing to help.

Urhobo Outreach encourages members to look for opportunities to support others through donations, volunteering, community partnerships and simple acts of kindness.

By working together, we can extend our positive impact beyond our association and contribute to the well-being of the communities in which we live.

Serving With Compassion and Dignity

Every Person Matters

At the heart of Urhobo Outreach is a simple belief: everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, kindness and respect.

We understand that individuals and families may experience difficult circumstances for many different reasons.

Our goal is not to judge, but to help.

Through our outreach activities, we seek to offer practical assistance in a way that respects people's circumstances, privacy and humanity.

Whether someone needs warm clothing, a hot meal or the support of a caring community, we believe every person deserves compassion.

We Serve With Kindness. We Give With Respect. We Help With Dignity.

Family & Community

Urhobo Picnic

Urhobo Picnic

A Day of Fun, Family, Friendship & Community.

Urhobo Wado! Isoko Wado!

One Community. One Beautiful Summer Day. Countless Memories.

Summer in Manitoba is a wonderful time to step outdoors, reconnect with friends and enjoy the company of family.

The Urhobo Picnic, organized by the Urhobo Association of Manitoba (UAM), is a special one-day outdoor gathering that brings Urhobo and Isoko families, friends and community members together for relaxation, recreation and meaningful connections.

Held during the month of July at a selected beach, park or campground in Manitoba, the picnic offers an opportunity to enjoy nature, share delicious food, participate in fun activities and strengthen the friendships that unite our community.

From children's games and outdoor activities to family conversations, laughter and shared meals, Urhobo Picnic is about creating beautiful summer memories together.

The picnic takes place in years when UAM is not hosting its biennial Urhobo Day celebration, giving our community another opportunity to gather and enjoy time together.

Fresh Air. Happy Families. Stronger Connections.

About Urhobo Picnic

Bringing Families Together Under the Summer Sun

Urhobo Picnic is one of UAM's cherished outdoor community activities, providing a relaxed and welcoming environment for members and their families to spend quality time together.

Unlike our larger cultural celebrations, the picnic focuses on informal family recreation, friendship and community bonding.

It is a day to step away from our busy schedules, enjoy the beauty of Manitoba's summer and reconnect with the people who make our community special.

Parents have opportunities to socialize, children can play and make friends, and families can enjoy outdoor experiences together.

Although the event carries the name Urhobo Picnic, it brings together both Urhobo and Isoko members of our association, reflecting the unity and shared community spirit that define UAM.

Together Outdoors. Together as Families. Together as One Community.

When We Celebrate

A Special July Gathering

Urhobo Picnic is normally organized during July, when Manitoba's warm summer weather provides an opportunity for outdoor recreation and family activities.

The picnic follows a special scheduling tradition within UAM.

In years when Urhobo Day is celebrated, the Urhobo Picnic is not held.

Because Urhobo Day takes place once every two years, the picnic provides an alternative community gathering during the years between those major cultural celebrations.

This arrangement allows UAM to maintain meaningful opportunities for families to connect while focusing its resources and planning efforts on each event.

Whether we are celebrating our heritage at Urhobo Day or enjoying a relaxing summer picnic, our goal remains the same: bringing our community together.

Different Celebrations. One Strong Community.

A Day Filled With Fun & Friendship

Something for Everyone to Enjoy

Urhobo Picnic is designed to provide a relaxed and enjoyable outdoor experience for children, adults and families.

The day's activities may vary depending on the selected location, weather conditions and arrangements made by the organizing committee.

Children's Games & Outdoor Fun

Children are at the heart of our family gatherings.

The picnic creates opportunities for children to enjoy outdoor games, playful activities and time with friends in a welcoming community environment.

From running and playing to participating in organized group activities, children can enjoy the excitement of summer while building friendships with other Urhobo and Isoko families.

Happy Children. Beautiful Summer Memories.

Family Games & Friendly Competitions

A little friendly competition can bring plenty of laughter.

Depending on the venue and program, families and community members may participate in group games, recreational activities and friendly competitions.

These moments encourage teamwork, participation and interaction between different age groups.

Whether taking part or cheering others on, everyone can share in the fun.

Food, Barbecue & Refreshments

Good food and good company are an important part of every memorable picnic.

Urhobo Picnic provides an opportunity for families to enjoy meals, snacks, barbecue and refreshments while spending time together outdoors.

Food brings people together, encourages conversation and creates a warm atmosphere of hospitality and friendship.

Whether enjoying familiar Nigerian flavours or favourite summer picnic meals, sharing food is one of the simple pleasures that make the day special.

Beach, Park & Nature Activities

Activities depend on the selected location and arrangements made for the gathering.

Language & Culture

Urhobo Summer Camp

Urhobo Summer Camp

Learning Our Languages. Discovering Our Culture. Connecting Generations.

Urhobo Wado! Isoko Wado!

Two Languages. Two Proud Cultures. One Learning Community.

Every year, from June to September, the Urhobo Association of Manitoba (UAM) brings children and families together through the Urhobo Summer Camp, a cultural and educational program dedicated to preserving and promoting the languages, traditions and heritage of both the Urhobo and Isoko peoples.

The camp creates a welcoming, interactive learning environment where children of all ages can discover their cultural roots, learn to speak and understand Urhobo or Isoko, explore traditional arts and crafts, and build meaningful friendships.

Through engaging in-person classes, children learn everyday expressions, greetings, numbers, body parts, family relationships, songs, cultural values and other important aspects of their heritage.

Recognizing that cultural learning is a lifelong journey, UAM also offers online Urhobo and Isoko language classes for adults who wish to learn, reconnect with their roots or strengthen their ability to communicate in their ancestral languages.

Whether you are a child discovering your heritage for the first time or an adult beginning your language-learning journey, Urhobo Summer Camp provides an opportunity to learn, connect and grow.

Our Languages. Our Heritage. Our Future.

About Urhobo Summer Camp

Bringing Our Heritage to Life Through Learning

Language is one of the strongest connections between generations.

It carries our stories, values, greetings, traditions and the knowledge passed down by our parents, grandparents and ancestors.

For Urhobo and Isoko families living in Manitoba, preserving our ancestral languages is especially important as children grow up in an environment where English and French are commonly spoken.

Urhobo Summer Camp was created to provide opportunities for children to experience their cultural heritage in a structured, supportive and enjoyable learning environment.

Although the program is called Urhobo Summer Camp, it celebrates and teaches both Urhobo and Isoko languages and cultures, ensuring that children from both communities have opportunities to learn about their identities.

Through interactive lessons, cultural activities, storytelling, songs, arts and crafts, and group participation, we help children develop confidence, cultural awareness and pride in their roots.

Our goal is not simply to teach words, but to help our children understand the meaning, values and traditions behind them.

Learning Today. Preserving Tomorrow.

Children's In-Person Summer Classes

A Fun and Interactive Cultural Learning Experience

From June through September, children of all ages come together for in-person learning sessions designed to make language and cultural education engaging and memorable.

Lessons are adapted to different ages and learning abilities, allowing children to participate at a comfortable pace.

Through games, conversations, visual materials, songs and hands-on activities, children develop foundational language skills while discovering the cultural traditions of the Urhobo and Isoko peoples.

What Our Children Learn

Greetings & Everyday Expressions

Children learn how to greet parents, grandparents, elders, friends and other members of the community in Urhobo or Isoko.

They explore common expressions used in everyday conversations and learn the cultural importance of showing respect through greetings.

Numbers & Counting

Learning numbers is an important foundation for language development.

Through counting games, repetition, songs and interactive exercises, children become familiar with numbers and simple counting expressions in their chosen language.

Parts of the Body

Children learn the names of different body parts in Urhobo or Isoko through pictures, movement, songs and interactive classroom activities.

These lessons make learning practical, memorable and enjoyable.

Family Members & Relationships

Family is central to both Urhobo and Isoko cultures.

Children learn words used to identify family members and relationships, including parents, grandparents, siblings and other relatives.

They also explore the cultural values of family connection, respect for elders and community responsibility.

Common Words & Simple Conversations

Children are introduced to everyday vocabulary and simple expressions they can use at home and within the community.

Lessons encourage them to listen, repeat, ask questions and gradually build confidence in speaking and understanding their language.

Songs, Rhymes & Storytelling

Music and storytelling are powerful ways of preserving language and culture.

Through traditional songs, rhymes, stories and group participation, children discover cultural expressions while developing listening and speaking skills.

Traditional Arts & Crafts

Children explore creativity through hands-on arts and crafts inspired by Urhobo and Isoko cultural traditions.

Activities may include drawing, colouring, pattern-making and other age-appropriate creative projects that introduce children to cultural symbols, clothing, celebrations and everyday heritage.

Cultural Values & Traditions

Beyond language, children learn about the values that help shape our communities.

Topics include respect for elders, hospitality, family relationships, cultural celebrations, traditional attire and the importance of helping others.

These lessons encourage children to appreciate their heritage and develop a strong sense of belonging.

Learning Through Fun & Friendship

Where Culture Meets Creativity

We believe children learn best when they feel welcomed, encouraged and excited to participate.

Urhobo Summer Camp combines language instruction with engaging cultural activities that make learning enjoyable.

Our Children Are the Heart of Our Community

Creating Joy. Building Friendships. Inspiring the Future.

At the Urhobo Association of Manitoba, we recognize that our children represent the future of our community.

As Urhobo and Isoko families raise their children in Manitoba, it is important to create opportunities for them to develop meaningful relationships, experience community life and grow up with a sense of belonging.

Our annual Christmas Party is one of the ways we bring these values to life.

By creating a celebration focused on children, we give them more than entertainment. We give them opportunities to form friendships, share experiences and build positive memories of their community.

We want every child to feel welcomed, included and celebrated.

Happy Children. Strong Families. A Brighter Future.

Celebrating Family & Community

Bringing Urhobo and Isoko Families Together

The UAM Christmas Party is also a special opportunity for parents, grandparents and families to celebrate the festive season together.

Throughout the year, families balance work, school and other responsibilities. Our Christmas celebration provides a moment to reconnect, relax and enjoy the company of friends and loved ones.

It strengthens the relationships between Urhobo and Isoko families and reinforces the values of friendship, generosity, mutual support and community spirit.

As our children play and celebrate together, parents and families have opportunities to connect and strengthen the bonds that make our association special.

Through these gatherings, we continue building a welcoming community where families support one another and children grow up surrounded by friendship and care.

One Community. Many Families. Countless Beautiful Memories.

The Spirit of Christmas

Sharing Love, Kindness & Generosity

Christmas is a season associated with love, giving, gratitude and togetherness.

At UAM, our annual Christmas Party reflects these values through a celebration that places children and families at its centre.

It reminds us of the importance of kindness, generosity and creating moments of happiness for others.

Whether through a thoughtful gift, a shared meal, a friendly conversation or the laughter of children enjoying themselves, the spirit of Christmas comes alive when we celebrate together.

Our hope is that every family leaves with warm memories and every child carries home a little extra Christmas joy.

The Greatest Gift Is the Joy We Share.

A Tradition That Grows With Our Children

Making Christmas Memories Year After Year

Every year, the UAM Christmas Party brings new experiences, new friendships and new memories.

As our children grow, the celebration becomes part of their childhood story.

The children who once attended as toddlers return as older children and teenagers, reconnecting with friends and building lasting relationships within our community.

For parents, these gatherings provide opportunities to watch their children grow while sharing meaningful experiences with other families.

Year after year, we continue a tradition that celebrates childhood, strengthens families and brings our community closer together.

Celebrating Our Children. Strengthening Our Families. Sharing the Joy of Christmas.

Christmas is a time for laughter, generosity, friendship and creating memories with the people who matter most.

Every year, the Urhobo Association of Manitoba brings our community together to celebrate these values, with our children at the heart of the occasion.

Through fun activities, festive experiences and family fellowship, we create opportunities for our children to enjoy the magic of Christmas while building friendships and connections that last beyond the festive season.

We invite you and your family to join us for another joyful celebration.

Little Smiles. Big Memories. One Happy Community.
